Oversleep is out on Steam

#release · #oversleep · #godot · #gamedev ·4 min

Oversleep is out on Steam today.

It’s a first-person puzzle game made in Godot. You wake up somewhere you shouldn’t be and have to find your way out. The levels are short and the speedrun community already has timing spreadsheets.

I led Toasted Games on this one as lead programmer. Built in Godot from day one. The rest of this post is the compressed version of how we got here.

How we got here

  • February 2024 — Steam page goes up. Strange how it didn’t feel real until I saw the page live.
  • May 2024 — Teaser trailer lands ahead of Steam Next Fest in June. Around this time we got insanely lucky: Michael Baugh, the composer working on the soundtrack for Metro: Awakening, joined us to produce the soundtrack for Oversleep.
  • September 2024 — Playtest build out the door. Working with Godot has been an absolute joy, and 4.3 fixed a handful of things we’d been carrying workarounds for.
  • October 2024 — Gameplay trailer, Steam Next Fest, and now the full release.

What’s in it

  • Hand-crafted first-person puzzle rooms
  • Speedrun-friendly design: clear objectives, no padding, consistent physics
  • A soundtrack by Michael Baugh
  • Built on Godot 4.3

Wishlists, reviews, and speedrun submissions are all immensely appreciated. Shipping a game is a strange feeling and I’m going to go sit with that for a bit.
